Math is a challenging subject for many people, linear algebra is certainly not an easy topic. Studies have shown that students were able to adopt the concept better when they are enjoying the topic, which leads us in believing that making linear algebra fun and engaging to learn will give a much better outcome.

The game that teaches you linear algebra? Wonder what it will look like? Try out the LINEAR ALGEBRA GAME and become a linear algebra expert by embarking on a treasure hunt.

Game Overview

We aim to teach students the idea of linear algebra. The players can discuss linear algebra concepts and apply them, the next time they play the game. The player discovers the correct vectors/optimal path to pass the ball successfully. He also discovers what each kind of transformation does and the resultant vector. We depict the path of the Vector Ball on the field map based on the vectors chosen to teach the concepts of linear algebra. The player is prompted to try different combinations of vectors to pass the ball successfully in the higher levels. He also solves the transformation puzzle in Unit 2.

The goal in the first chapter is to score the maximum goals within the predefined time. This is achieved by passing the ball repeatedly between user controlled players and score a goal eventually. The team with maximum number of goals within the level time of 2 minutes wins the game. Scoring also depends on the time taken to choose the correct vector(s) from the given options. For the second chapter, the letter in the trophy all appear to be jumbled up. The goal is to perform actions like reflection, scaling, shifting etc. on jumbled letters to fix them and place them in their correct positions. Achieving the goal within the defined time will lead to a win.

Metrics considered are Knowledge, Comprehension and Application. They solve linear algebra problems through self-learning, motivation and inculcate cognitive learning. Knowledge component is propagated through the various mathematical concepts used during the game. The mathematical representations allow them to infer and thus, comprehend and make changes in their approach towards solving the problem while the scoring measures how well they have grasped the concepts.
