Release Year:

Threat Hunters is a single player, third person game intended to train Government audiences on recognizing and reporting insider threats in an office environment. Threat Hunters is non linear in nature; players can choose to thoroughly explore the environment, hunt for clues around the office, and interview employees. When conducting interviews, players can choose from a wide variety of dialogues to choose from, which offer different outcomes. Depending on how well players demonstrate their knowledge of cyber and information security concepts (grounded in ISO and NIST standards), NPCs in the game will either provide more or less help and/or useful information. Players have access to an evidence card screen, where they can check boxes for each character in the game based on insider threat indicators outlined in DOD Instruction 5205.16 the Insider Threat Training program. The core objective of the game is to submit an insider threat report to the office supervisor; once this step has been completed players who video conference with their boss will find out if they identified the correct threat, and why they were correct or incorrect.

Game Overview

Threat Hunters teaches players to search for insider threat indicators that may surface inadvertently when interacting with other people routinely. In addition, players will be presented with numerous cyber and information security issues and scenarios; in many cases there will be several answers which all seem correct. Players who choose the best answer in these scenarios will be rewarded with employees who offer more help or useful information which can help the player narrow the search for the insider threat.

The primary goal of Threat Hunters is for players to successfully identify the insider threat, fill out a threat report on the in-game mobile phone with accompanying motive assigned, then submit the report to their supervisor.

While the characters in Threat Hunters are Government Civilians and Contractors, the audience for the game is all members of the Department of War (Service Members, Contractors, Civilians) who are looking for an alternative to traditional slide show or quiz based mandatory cybersecurity training programs.

There is only one correct answer which players are seeking to achieve in Threat Hunters; successful identification of the threat lends to an ending sequence where players are recognized and congratulated by their supervisor. Wrong identification of the threat will trigger and end sequence where deficiencies are identified, and players are encouraged to return to the office to search for more evidence. Each of the characters in Threat Hunters has some level of insider threat indicators, so players must use critical thinking and elimination strategies to narrow down their selections.
