The CTTSO/TSWG required an engaging and interactive online learning game to train military personnel in the field to collect sensitive information at crimes scenes around the world. The online curriculum and the simulation game which became the final assessment provided easier and more cost effective access to a broader audience anywhere in the world. This simulation game called “Sensitive Site Exploitation” was deployed in South Africa to Navy and Marine personnel and found to be highly effective by the military personnel which improved our country’s relations with other nations.

Game Overview

The Sensitive Site Exploitation (SSE) incorporates pre-requisite lessons prior to entering the game environments. Lessons 1-8, Basics of SSE, were designed to provide learners with foundational knowledge about the SSE process. A case-based SSE mission is interwoven throughout each lesson as a means to reinforce key learning objectives and promote the critical thinking skills necessary to prioritize mission tasks and maximize intelligence outcomes. Case-based mission information acquired at the conclusion of Lesson 8, leads the learner to Lesson 9, Ideal SSE, a virtual world simulated mission with unlimited time to practice SSE skills in an unconstrained environment. In turn, mission outcomes accomplished in Lesson 9, lead to Lesson 10, Tactical SSE, which challenges users to complete a Sensitive Site Exploitation mission that is unexpectedly impacted by changes to mission conditions, including randomized variables for time on target.

Throughout the simulations, the learner has a variety of tools at their disposal for use in discovering evidence within the environment. The SSE Tutorial is designed to teach the learner how to interact with the environments once they are immersed in the 3D virtual world. Both the Tactical and Ideal SSE simulations are designed to be exploratory and the learner is provided minimal direction about the type of evidence in the environments. The learner applies knowledge gained during their training to exploit the environment. In the Tactical SSE environment, the learner has a limited amount of time before enemy combatants descend upon the environment. The learner must exploit the environment and leave within the time constraints.

The SSE training was designed and developed to provide a holistic overview of SSE procedures through a widely accessible C/WBT program for military and intelligence personnel, independent of any area of operation.

The player is measured based on key decisions made during the simulation game. In the Ideal environment, while the player has unlimited time to explore, they are required to collect the most important sensitive site information in order to solve the crime. In the Tactical environment, the player has limited time to use the best tools in order to collect the most valuable information before the combatants return, or a bomb explodes. Measurement is obvious to the players, as their virtual life and that of others will depend on the player’s ability to follow orders, collect evidence, and get out of the facility before disaster strikes.
