Best Social Media Crowdsourcing Game
The game assesses multi patient management skills (MPMS) in the Pediatric Emergency Department. It is initially focused on assessment of skill and prioritization, but we also intend to learn about patterns of more and less successful management strategies and to then utilize the game to modify behavior by teaching more efficient management strategies.
Pediatric Vital Signs is a commercial game that recreates the challenges of the Pediatric Emergency Department to exercise user decision making and prioritization under stress. In the game, the player’s job is to treat patients as they appear in the available exam rooms, review the patient’s condition via the case presentation chart, then order medications, studies, and procedures relevant to the patient’s complaint. As in a real Emergency Department, the patient requires time before the laboratories return and medications take effect. While waiting on the completion of these orders, the player can attend to other patients, which maximizes MPMS and efficiency. After the player has successfully stabilized a patient, they will then finalize care of the patient by ordering him/her to be admitted orDischarged. Allowing a stable patient to remain in the Emergency Department is discouraged, both in real life, and inPediatric Vital Signs.
Pediatric and emergency medicine resident physicians
Player actions are compared against ideal treatments and scored for fit to optimal performance. In addition, the Stemmler Research fund provides additional data on actual patient performance and licensing board exam performance of the residents who will be playing the game. Their game performance will be directly compared and measured against real life patient care and on textbook knowledge.
