OnOrbit – Virtual Space Lab

Organization:

OnOrbit

Release Year:

OnOrbit is a high-fidelity space hardware simulator / sandbox for space enthusiasts and educators.

Think of a cross between KSP & MS Flight Simulator with some unique twists:
– It’s real time
– It uses real parts (as close to possible) and associated behaviors
– It’s located in our actual solar system
– You can create spacecraft and upgrade space stations in game
– There’s a potential future hardware modding platform that modders and enthusiasts can get right into.

OnOrbit is great for space enthusiasts and students who show early aptitude and interest in aerospace.
It’s mission driven, and students are encouraged to complete discrete missions by using the space technology at their disposal to reach their objectives.

Its part of our mission to get in front of kids who don’t have the financial resources to participate in space education.

Game Overview

The Basics of Space Hardware Engineering
Familiarizes players with the basics of space hardware, including all major subsystems required to place a craft “on orbit” and to operate it to complete a mission. This is especially helpful for those entering the space for the first time.

System Optimizing and System Engineering
Choices matter. Optimize your structure, placement of your thrusters, amount of turning force, placement of cameras to achieve a mission.
The final performance of your spacecraft and its capabilities are directly down to how you chose to build it.

Manual Operation of Subsystems
Rather than automatic operations, players must manually operate spacecraft, to understand how these systems work, before they can climb the tech tree and

Parts Interpreting and Parts Orientation
Space has a blizzard of commercial off the shelf components. We familiarize players with real world space components, so they can understand the reasons they exist and why they should be included.

They are mission based and currently include:
– Launch a ChipSat
– Build your first stack
– Build your first CubeSat
– Earth Reconnaissance / Earth Observation
– Damaged Satellite Reconnaissance
– Dock with a damaged satellite and recover its error log to transmit to mission control
– Operate a robotic arm in space

Many more missions are planned.

The prmary audience is space enthusiasts.
Due to the difficulty of the game, some of its concepts and language, we recommend a rating of 12+ but have a broad age range, with the majority of players between 20 and 45.

Mission completion.
The player masters the skills through mission completion, and new missions are not unlocked until the last skill has been achieved.
This is how we assess how far a player has come.
