To address the childhood obesity crisis, Stottler Henke Associates, in collaboration with Teachers College Columbia University has developed Creature 101, a game that provides middle school students with motivation, skills and sense of personal agency needed to make healthy diet choices in their daily lives. It is based on the Linking Food and the Environment (LiFE) Curriculum Series. Using the popular game motif of virtual companion care, Creature101 requires players to take care of and guide a set of virtual creatures as they complete adventures in a simulated world. Creature 101 is currently being used as a part of the Life curriculum.

Game Overview

Learn basic nutritional information about common snack foods. Players learn the recommended levels of sugar and fat in common foods, then learn the amounts of sugar and fats in those common foods. They learn the concept of energy balance, Either having healthy snack such as fruits and vegetables and water, or balancing occasional sugary snacks and drinks with energetic exercise and activities.

The challenge of the game is to gain the necessary knowledge of foods nutritional content and the effect of exercise, so that the player can gain their master-apprentice badge and be able to successfully care for their creature.

15 year olds+

The information is tested through three methods. First, there are direct quizzes to insure that they have paid attention to the educational resources presented. The students then must complete games that reinforce and test the factual information the students should glean from the educational resources presented. Finally, the player must manage their creature’s behaviors to achieve energy balance. Completing each of these tasks will result in new badges being awarded to the creatures.
